PRAYER FESTIVAL DAY - Special Practice - Saga Dawa Duchen

June 14, 2022

Happy Saga Dawa Duchen!

  • SAGA DAWA DUCHEN, Tuesday June 14, 7:00 p.m. EDT: Please join us at the Ottawa Palyul Centre to celebrate Saga Dawa Duchen. These great festival prayer days are considered the most auspicious times to make offerings and prayers for oneself and loved ones.  Often this is done through the lighting of candles and envelope donations that are placed on the altar, and the chanting of the Butterlamp offering prayer. It is a sweet and simple ceremony that creates great harmony and peace in one's heart.

Sagadawa, the 4th lunar month is one of the most auspicious and important months in the Tibetan lunar calendar year. Saga Dawa 2022 runs from May 31, 2022 – June 29, 2022. The 15th day of this lunar month, the full moon day, is called Saga Dawa Düchen (Düchen means “great occasion”). In 2022, Saga Dawa Düchen falls on Tuesday, June 14. This day is the single most important holy day of the year for Tibetan Buddhists.

Saga Dawa Düchen commemorates the birth, enlightenment, and parinirvana of our perfect and most supreme teacher, Buddha Shakyamuni.

Saga Dawa is also known as the month of merits; called Bumgyur Dawa (100,000 month). During this period it is considered that the karmic results of all actions both positive and negative are multiplied by 100,000. This, then, is a great time to make extra efforts in practicing Dharma, generosity, and compassion to accumulate greater virtue and purify our negative karma. Please pray for the long life of all holy Gurus, for the survival and spreading of Buddha’s teachings in the minds of all sentient beings, and peace on earth. May all beings benefit!
